About Gray Counts
Gray Counts was born from a mother’s love, a child’s resilience, and a journey no family ever expects to walk alone.
This foundation is inspired by Grayson — a bright, joyful little boy who began experiencing seizures at just 16 months old. What followed was a world of hospital visits, monitoring every movement, endless research, and living with unanswered questions. Despite numerous tests and procedures, the exact cause of his seizures remains uncertain. Doctors believe they may be connected to periventricular leukomalacia, a condition often linked to premature birth or low birth weight that can lead to developmental delays and lifelong neurological challenges.
Grayson lives with multiple seizure types, including febrile, grand mal, and absence seizures. Each one affects him differently — from moments of stillness where he blanks out, to episodes that bring loss of consciousness and intense physical strain. Behind every diagnosis is a parent’s silent fear: the worry of a seizure happening during sleep, the anxiety of oxygen loss, and the constant need to stay vigilant. Yet through it all, Grayson is taught the same truth every day — he is intelligent, capable, and no different from any other child. He simply moves through the world with extra precautions to keep him safe.
Gray Counts exists to turn fear into action. What started as one family’s fight quickly revealed a much larger reality: epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder, affecting people of every age, race, and gender. Each year, approximately 150,000 individuals are diagnosed, and 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Even more challenging, many families never receive clear answers about why seizures begin.
The mission of Gray Counts is to raise awareness, support families navigating the unknown, and advocate for stronger research toward better treatments — and ultimately, a cure. No parent should feel alone in the fear, confusion, or isolation that often comes with a diagnosis like epilepsy.
Gray Counts stands as a reminder that every child’s life, every moment, and every story counts. Through education, advocacy, and community, this foundation honors Grayson’s strength while creating hope for families everywhere who are walking a similar path.
